a letter from our founder

Hello,

My name is Shannon Olive and I am the Founder/President for WomenFirst Transition and Referral Center. We are a grass-roots organization and nourishing environment where women rebuild their lives and self-worth through peer mentorship, life skills, empowerment groups, and essential community support. We serve justice involved women, women in recovery, and women seeking a transformation in her life recovering from a traumatic experience. Our primary focus is African American women, because these women face a disproportionate amount of stereotyping and cultural prejudices in our society.

With the current issues women face today: poverty; hunger; homelessness; continuing gender wage gap; violence against women; treatment of women in prison; access to rehabilitation centers, and human trafficking/sex slavery. Must I go on? There’s work to be done until change comes. As a new organization, one of our goals is to establish and maintain relationships with partner organizations, offer resources and provide referrals to accomplish our participants’ personal and professional goals, while meeting the immediate needs. In doing this, we can make a tremendous difference together through more opportunities for women; respect and love given to women; support and encouragement amongst women; women leaders in our community; successful women; and strong and bold women advocating for themselves.

Our current program focus is facilitating “I Love Me” Women Empowerment Group. Our goal is to help women identify and discover themselves while starting over. The vision is to uncover their experiences, recognize their strengths, acknowledge they are somebody, and teach them to love and value themselves.

As we celebrate these women, we honor the opportunity to be better stewards of the privileges we gained, create awareness for all people, highlight the best of Black History and Culture, and honor the Historic leaders of the Black Community. Let’s come together to remember equity, equality, and justice for all.

Thank you and God Bless.

Shannon Olive
